Developing a habit is language you may be familiar with. It’s in all the books now-a-days. However, Jesus followers have referred to following Jesus as “practices.” We practice the words and ways of Jesus in order to experience the love of God, and share that love with others. Below are some resources to help you do that. Be sure to look at the practice as a practical way for you to integrate the Bible into your daily life. Additionally, there are reading plans available that we think could be helpful.

  • Lectio Divina is an ancient spiritual practice focused on prayerfully engaging the biblical text and encountering Jesus, the Living Word, through it. The term is derived from Latin words meaning “reading” (Lectio) and “divine” (Divina). This divine reading is a conversation with God that opens spaces to hear his voice through Scripture.

PRACTICING LECTIO DIVINA: Choose a passage of Scripture no more than 10 verses.

    FIRST READING (HEAD)

Slowly read the passage of Scripture. As you do, pay attention to any word, phrase, or idea that catches your attention. Then pause for a moment as you sit with that word, phrase, or idea. What do you notice?

    SECOND READING (HEART)

Read the passage again and pause to dwell on what the Holy Spirit brought forward in the first reading. What thought or emotion is resonating within you as God’s Spirit speaks through this Scripture? Perhaps there is a profound connection to your current season of life, which God wants to be a part of.

    THIRD READING (HANDS)

Read the passage once more and begin to converse with God about what you have experienced. Tell God the word, phrase, or idea that stands out to you and what came to mind as you meditated on it. Listen to how God may be using the word, phrase, or idea to bless you and form you. What is God saying, and how do you want to respond?
