Developing a habit is language you may be familiar with. It’s in all the books now-a-days. However, Jesus followers have referred to following Jesus as “practices.” We practice the words and ways of Jesus in order to experience the love of God, and share that love with others. Below are some resources to help you do that. Be sure to look at the practice as a practical way for you to orient some time around those who aren’t like you.

  • Community at Table

We often find Jesus reclining at the table with people throughout the Gospels. From meeting with tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10) to the Last Supper with his disciples (Matthew 26:17–30; Mark 14:12–26; Luke 22:7–39), the Gospel seems to move at the speed of hospitality. There is a profound theology around meals at tables.

Community around a table is more than occasional hospitality. It’s truly a practice— one that helps us remember that Jesus longs for tables full of people who are different from one another (Luke 14) but who experience his presence among them.

It is a place of encouraging others and receiving encouragement. It is a place for asking questions and deepening our relationship with Jesus and one another.

So, as we find ourselves around tables—at home, at school, at work, at the cafés and restaurants we frequent, or anywhere else—gather and share a meal together. Slow down and be fully present. Look one another in the eye. Plan so people feel valued and seen. And remember that Jesus is in your midst working all things together for the good of those who love him.

To love him, we must first experience his love. Many times, that is around a table.
